Description:

Wising Up: designing a course for the future

Instructors Peter Whitehouse MD-PhD, Nicholas Brennecke MD

Overview:

What and how do we need to learn individually and together that will help us design our personal and collective future? This series of five independent but interlinked sessions will address this topic through different lenses and involving people of different ages- elders, adults, undergraduates, and in some sessions elementary school students. Participants will include learners from Case Western Reserve University, the Intergenerational Schools, Judson Smart Living, and the community through Siegal Lifelong Learning  programs The interactive sessions will focus on areas of creative tension between levels of complexity: Mind-Brain, Individual-Community, Society-Nature, Analogue-Digital, and Past-Future.

Sessions

Mind-Brain

Date: October 9, 2019 4:00 to 5:30

Location: Judson Smart Living (the Manor) 1890 E. 107th Cleveland 44106

Peter Whitehouse MD-PhD, Nicholas Brennecke MD

To know about the world we need a healthy brain and an understanding of how we learn. What does cognitive neuroscience contribute to our wising up processes? How can we enhance them?

Individual-Community

Date: October 16, 2019 4:00-5:30

Location: Judson Smart Living (Manor) 1890 E. 107th Cleveland 44106

Peter Whitehouse MD-PhD, Nicholas Brennecke MD

Our individual knowledge and personal development are key to our own happiness and that of others around us. How do we enhance our own future possibilities but do so in a community setting to help each other design a course for our collective future?

Society-Nature

Date: October 23, 2019 4:00-5:30

Location: Judson Smart Living (Manor) 1890 E. 107th Cleveland 44106

Peter Whitehouse MD-PhD, Nicholas Brennecke MD

Homo sapiens has evolved, perhaps unwisely, to think of themselves as able to dominate nature. Our growing cities are monuments to this attitude. Yet environmental changes are teaching us we need to work with nature and not against her. How do we design ecologically sustainable environments for us today and for future generations?

Analog-Digital

Date: October 30, 2019 4:00-5:30

Location: Judson Smart Living (Manor) 1890 E. 107th Cleveland 44106

Peter Whitehouse MD-PhD, Nicholas Brennecke MD

Learning technologies and social networks have intensified our opportunities to learn, but have come at a cost. How do we see integrating the importance of place and human relationships in the learning environments of the future? What does a smart/wise community look like going forward?

Spirited citizenship (Past-Future)

Date: November 6, 2019 4:00-5:30

Location: Judson Smart Living (Manor) 1890 E. 107th Cleveland 44106 (possible field trip)

Peter Whitehouse MD-PhD, Nicholas Brennecke MD

In this last capstone session we will pull out the intergenerational stops and invite elementary school students to join the undergraduates, adults, and elders to contribute to a discussion of how the past informs our present and helps us today to design the future. We will focus on the concept of spirited citizenship. How do we all participate in a democracy innovatively and actively to create the future of our civilizations?
