Description:
The discovery of Judaism’s very early manuscripts, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Aleppo Codex and the Cairo Geniza documents, have all provided historians with new and important material for understanding the past. At the same time, the unearthing of these documents has created an underground black market industry. This talk provides an overview of how these texts were uncovered, the challenges surrounding their authentication and the search for more related texts. We will further explore the shadowy world of forged documents and high-priced sales that have come to light in recent years. (Cost includes a light dinner reception prior to the lecture.)
