Starting in the late 19th century, Jews seeking to integrate as citizens throughout the West engaged with Zionism. The response of the majority of Jews and Jewish organizations in America to the Zionist effort shifted markedly following the Balfour Declaration; the conclusion of World War I, World War II and the Holocaust; following the establishment of the State of Israel; and in the aftermath of the 1967 Six Day War. As we witness the ongoing evolution of American-Jewish attitudes towards Israel and the Zionist vision, our discussion will focus on views expressed by leading Reform rabbis 100–150 years ago. Their concerns and views offer a valuable set of perspectives that would enrich our evaluation of current American-Jewish approaches to Israel.
